Fayette County secured a 2022 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant funded by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) for the development of a Safety Action Plan by June 2025. This plan will establish a Vision Zero goal to reduce the crash fatalities and serious injuries. Bike-Walk Fayette is a member of the Stakeholder Committee.
Bike-Walk Fayette is coordinating with the Fayette County Public Works Department to replace all obsolete "Share the Road" signs with the current Georgia State bicycle passing sign and adding designated bicycle routes by 2026. These routes are proposed to be formally incorporated into the next Fayette County Comprehensive Transportation Plan Update in 2025.
Bike-Walk Fayette is a partner with the SouthSide Cycling Club and other local groups in promoting the construction and maintenance of natural surface trails and trail facilities accessible for all users in local public greenspace parks. Several trail projects described in the new Peachtree City Recreation Master Plan are anticipated to be approved and begin construction in 2025. Input is also being provided to the Peachtree City ADA Transition Plan 2025 Update.
Bike-Walk Fayette has been an active participant in the PeopleForBikes City Ratings program since it's inception in 2018, and encouraging other Georgia cities to participate. Results are measured by City Ratings.
PeopleForBikes initiated the new Recreational Bicycling Access Tool in 2025. Bike-Walk Fayette has initiated updates of local amenities and trails measured in OpenStreetMap by the RBAT.
Bike-Walk Fayette has been an active participant in the ARC's Regional Trail Roundtable since 2014. Our present efforts have been to encourage trail planning by Southern Crescent communities for the 2025 update.
Bike-Walk Fayette wrote an Active Community Action Plan for Peachtree City while a Fellow in the 2022 Georgia Walking College. Vision: 5 years from now, Peachtree City will be an active community fully connected by pedestrian networks, allowing all residents to have equitable access to active recreation or an alternative mode of transportation. Results are measured by City Ratings.
Bike-Walk Fayette encourages our local governments to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and create a Community Action Plan to improve local conditions. The AARP Livability Index Transportation category measures 7 metrics and 3 public policies.
The Southern Crescent Trail is the proposed repurposing of the Norfolk-Southern railbed inactive since 1989. This could be a new 30-mile linear greenbelt trail and park from Senioa through Brooks and Griffin to Henry County. All Counties and communities along the rail right-of-way are presently in favor of this regionally significant active transportation project.
Bike-Walk Fayette is working through the Fayette County SS4A planning process to include the recommendation for formal adoption of Complete Streets design ordinances by all local governments.
The presence of end-of-trip facilities has been voluntary by public and private property owners up to this point. Bike-Walk Fayette is encouraging voluntary installation as well as local ordinances to make this a design requirement for future developments and redevelopments.
Bike-Walk Fayette is continuously conducting local Walking and Biking Audits following the methodology established by AARP Livable Communities. Bike-Walk Fayette authored for AARP Walk Audit Worksheets for Multiuse Paths and Trails in 2022 to enhance audits of side paths and greenway trails used by active transportation and micromobility devices.
