Alternative Transportation

Alternative Transportation

Alternative Transportation

Any mode of travel that serves as an alternative to the single occupant vehicle. This can include all forms of ridesharing such as carpooling, vanpooling, as well as senior transport, micromobility devices, and personal transportation vehicles (PVT).

How We Move Forward

Build Active Transportation Networks

  • Create connected communities by providing safe, comfortable, convenient, reliable, efficient, and affordable ways for people to get around.   Includes bike lanes, sidewalks, multi-use paths and trails.
  • Increase alternative transportation infrastructure connections from our neighborhoods with local destinations equipped with end-of-trip facilities, providing an alternative to driving a car and empower people to engage in healthy outdoor recreation.
  • Promote designation and construction of regionally significant trail connections between communities as part of the Atlanta Regional Commission Regional Trail Vision.

Sustain and Improve Community Amenities

  • Fayette County residents frequently call for path and sidewalk improvements to connect their neighborhoods to destinations.
  • Develop and implement alternative parking standards for bicycles and personal transportation vehicles (PVT).
  • The Peachtree City path network is rated as one of the top community services provided to residents.
  • Real Estate agents promote properties based on path connections.

Provide Opt-Out Opportunities

  • Fayette County residents have widely adopted using an alternative mode of all forms for local trips where there are neighborhood path connections.
  • There are an estimated 25,000 bicycles for 39,000 residents in Peachtree City.
  • Some 6 percent of Peachtree City residents no longer own a car, and use an active or alternative mode to travel.
  • Eighty percent of Peachtree City households own one or more golf carts.
  • Approximately 500 students at both McIntosh and Starrs Mill High School use golf carts to drive to school.

Commit to Investments

  • Include active transportation network requirements and capital improvement projects in local comprehensive plans, ADA transition plans and comprehensive transportation plans.
  • Include active transportation capital improvement projects, maintenance and supporting capital equipment purchases in annual budgets and local Special Purpose Local Allocation Tax (SPLOST) programs for citizen approval by vote.
